Roy Charles Bridges, BA, PhD, FRGS, FRHistS. Emeritus Professor of History, University of Aberdeen. President of the Hakluyt Society 2002-2008.

 

Born September 26th 1932 in Aylesbury.  Educated at Harrow Weald County Grammar School, University of Keele, King’s College and SOAS, University of London.

BA with first-class honours in History and Geography, 1957; PhD in History of Africa, 1963.

 

Married 1960 to Jill Margaret Lewis. Two sons, two daughters.

 

Career

Lecturer in History, Makerere University, Uganda, 1960-65.  Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Professor of History, University of Aberdeen, 1965-1997.  Visiting Assistant Professor of History, Indiana University, USA 1967.  Shorter spells of teaching at Universities of Oran, Algeria, Nairobi, Kenya, etc.

 

Teaching mainly in European, British, and African history. Supervision of approx. 20 successful postgraduates.  Chairman, African Studies Group.  A major interest in planning and teaching Access courses for mature students.

 

External Examiner for Universities of Ife, Nigeria; Fourah Bay, Sierra Leone; and in the UK, Stirling, Lancaster, Strathclyde.

 

Member of various university committees including Senate of the University of Aberdeen.

Head of the Department of History, University of Aberdeen, 1977-82, 1985-8 and 1990-94.
