Match of the week

September 20th Newcastle 8 Sheffield 0 report by Macbeth

Spent the time in the pub before hand listening to John saying he wouldn’t be happy unless we were three up with 5 minutes to go. Ben was more confident, it’s because he is still young enough to just expect us to win, and not worry about things like form, or formations.

Bobby came out to greet the crowd at about 10 to 3, and got a lovely reception, as you’d expect.

 The team was

 Harper

 Barton.................. Hughes.................. Goma...................... Domi

 Solano................ Lee................. Speed .....................Dyer

 Shearer .............................Ketsbaia

I’d have picked Robinson as I’m not a big Ketsbaia fan, but I suppose the result may tend to look as though Robson may have known better. The first 10 minutes were spent more with them in possession than us, although not much was happening in either goal mouth. Harper, under pre sure from Booth, then sliced a poor back pass to the edge of the box where a Wednesday player header goal wards, luckily wide though. Booth ran into to finish it off but was clearly 20 yards offside. A bit of a let off.

Hughes gets his first ever goal for the senior team Shearers fiirst is a deft touch from a Dyer cross. Our first came from a good header from Hughes would stayed up when a corner was originally cleared. I was slightly surprised at the ease of getting the cross in, and the ease of getting the header in. I got used to it though. Dyer was excellent. His pace petrifies defenders , and justifiably as he goes passed them seemingly at will. Shearer scored from a good centre that he right footedly flicked across the goalie. Shearer then went out to the edge of the box, beat the defender down the wing, the ball went into the box , Barton up from right back helped it on to the defenders arm, and it’s penalty time and goal number 2 for Shearer. Goal three took a few more minutes to appear. This was Shearer’s best as he attacked the ball at the far post holding off a couple of defenders to hit it Shearer gets his hat trickShearer gets his second from the spotin. Strange two centers on target to him and two goals scored. Ben is beside himself (and me) with excitement at the thought that if it is 4-0 at half time it should be 8-0 at the end. I explained it didn’t work like that. Dyer scored within a minute of the start of the second half, with a header from a sitting down position. Speed blatantly handled in the build up, but when you’re at the bottom and things are going well for you the ref doesn’t notice things like that. Shearer got his fourth when Pressman punched a corner to his feet and he passed it into an empty net.

Dyer heads in after Speed handballs.Speed heads in a great goalDyer pulled up sharply having one of his sprints down the wing. It looked ankle based to me, he tried to get up and carry on but Robinson was already desperate to get on. We went flat for a while but it’s difficult to play hard when the opposition are so appallingly bad and you’re 6 up. Seven came at another set piece, with Speed finally getting a header on target. Robinson wriggled his way into the box and ended up in a heap although I’m not sure anybody actually touched him. He went and asked Shearer if he could take it. Shearer just smiled, his cold smile, at him and stuck it in the corner.

Goal number five , for Shearer and it's a record.Shearer never scored four in one game till todaySheffield Wednesday were truly awful, their defence was clueless, and we were up for it. I’m not sure we were really 8 goals better than them but it is fair to say they are probably 8 goals worse than everybody. It’s difficult to give points for the players but I will anyway

Harper 5, nothing to do, poor handling of backpasses

Barton 7, nothing to do , but what he did he did well

Domi 7, see Barton

Hughes 8, confident and scored a good goal

Goma, 7 see Barton

Solano, 7 kept the ball moving, mobile, gets the ball in well from set pieces

Lee 8, bossed what he had to in midfield

 Speed 8, as per Lee

Dyer 9, what a nice boy

Ketsbaia 7, still headless but helped create space for Dyer

Shearer 10, 2 points per goal, but such an improved attitude as well

Met John afterwards and said to him that we'd left a minute (not true) from the end, and had we hung on for the win. Ben though had to bring up the fact I'd said it wouldn't be 8-0 just cos it was 4-0 at half time.
