Solano in Swap deal for McManaman !

Is the only headline I haven't seen in recent days, The unwanted Macca seems to have been linked with just about every club in England, and a few in Spain and Italy as well. Chances of Macca taking a 50 % pay cut to play in England I would say are are 50 - 50. If Real Madrid compensate the player then there is a chance that he will return to England, but my feeling is that Real will sell him to an Italian club, who can afford to pay silly wages, so they don't have a huge pay out to make to the player.

With a likely £6 million from the sales of Ferguson and Howey burning a hole in Robson's pocket, McManaman was an obvious link. So too is Villa's wantaway defender Gareth Southgate.. , who would be a welcome addition to NUFC, as long as he wasn't asked to take penaltys that is. Also linked to a Newcastle move is Rangers midfielder Giovanni Van Bronckhust, but would Rangers sell?

No I don't think so either.

Indeed I believe that the money will be spent on another striker and Emile Mpenza is still top of the list. Why buy another midfielder when you have Speed, Lee, Solano, Bassedas, Dyer, Gavilan, Glass and a host of other youngsters queuing up behind them. Especially when the plan seems to be to play Cordone or Gallacher behind the front two. What's really needed after losing Ketsbaia, Robinson and Ferguson is another quality player to cover for Shearer or Cort.

That's why I believe Robson will go back for the Young Belgian Mpenza as soon as he gets his hands on the Ferguson money. There is talk of Jason Euell coming to Newcastle, but that's just talk from the players agent, if he is to buy British, Celtics Mark Burchill would be a much better bet.

As for defence, again there are plenty of players to move out before new ones can be brought in. If Charvet, Serrant and Marcelino can be sold then possibly Robson will bring in Southgate or even go back for Helder, but for now he is making do with another youngster forking out a mere £50k for 20 year old Scottish Youngster Ryan McGuffie . The Ex Annan Athletic defender has agreed a one-year contract with Newcastle but isn't expected to get a taste of first team action in his first season. He plays at right back and with Barton, Griffin and Hughes ahead of him, he must bide his time in the reserves.

Robson is still debating wether or not to sign recent trialist Bruno for £2 million. He didn't see the midfielder in action when he was on trail two weeks ago as he was on tour in the USA. Robson has asked for the player to return for a second trial, but his club has told Newcastle that this will not happen and if Newcastle want the player then they must fork out the £2million asking price.

Then there's the problem of the goalkeeper. As Kareless looks likely to join Samsungspoor in Turkey For £200k, Newcastle are very short between the sticks (oooer missus). Vitor Baia and David Seaman's names have both been mentioned, but I believe a youngster will be brought in.

 So who else is going?

Des Hamilton has attracted interest from Gillingham and Garry Brady from Barnsley, but the £100k bid from the Yorkshire team was greeted with laughter by the NUFC summer sales team. Yes they want to sell the likes of Brady, Hamilton, Serrant , Charvet and Marthellino, but they aren't going to give their assets away.

Indeed Marcellino, may well be able to resurrect his career at Newcastle . There has still been no real interest in the player from the Continent and he looks likely to play alongside either Goma or Dabizas to keep him in the shop window

And Finally what about big Dunc? ........ You heard the news here first during the USA tour. The latest is that NUFC will accept £4.0 million with another million based on appearances. This appears to be acceptable to Everton. The stumbling block seems to be Mr Ferguson's pay off demands. Although he would love to return to Everton, he isn't too keen on taking a million a year pay cut. He is currently believed to be on £42k a week and as Everton won't pay more than £25 k a week, he would be losing £17 a week. The compromise seems to be that Everton and Newcastle both give the player a million each, (pay off and signing on fee) but tight fisted Everton, aren't too keen, so there is a stalemate.

Meanwhile Rangers are waiting in the wings for it all to break down, so they can swoop in and pick up a bargain.

2oth August sees the big kick off against Man U. at OT. My application for tickets was turned down , so I like millions around the world will be glued to the first game of the season live on Sky Sports.

Who is likely to be playing? ««

I would expect Given to start in Goal, although I think Harper is better, there isn't a lot between our two keepers. At the back I can see Barton and Hughes (playing left side), with Goma and Dabizas in the centre.

I think we'll see a 3 man midfield with Dyer , Lee and Speed,. Although Griff may well be in for Dyer if Robson isn't 100% fit. Up front Cort and Shearer will be supported by Cordone playing just behind the front two, and this is the player to watch this season. I can see him stealing the show.

Also likely to play a part is Diego Gavilan, who I think will be the super sub this season.

Nobby Solano could also be flying back for the game, although I believe that Robson won't use him in this game unless there are injury problems.
