Eclipse Photos

Here are the best of the photographs I took of the August 11th eclipse. They were, for the most part, taken on a tripod-mounted Kodak DC210 digital camera.

These two images were taken by holding a pair of "solar viewer" glasses over the lens of the camera. The right-hand one was taken at 11:17am, which was the time of maximum coverage at our location (Bootle, Merseyside). The total coverage at the time of maximum was 91.6%. I suppose it doesn't really look like less than 9% of the sun is uncovered, but then the focus isn't pin-sharp (and I have enlarged the photos a bit).

These two images were taken without a filter. The first was taken at 7:45am (well before the eclipse began) while the second was taken just after 11:17 (i.e. just after maximum coverage) They clearly show the difference in the sun's brightness at these times. I had to apply a touch-up to the 11:17 photo (the rest of the sky had come out too dark!), but I have applied exactly the same alteration to the 7:45 one (Remember, do not look directly at the photographs!)
