BLAST SHELTER.

Blast shelter.

PHOTOGRAPH: Dave Parkin, Heysham.

A blast-shelter, with the watch-office in the background. Blast-shelters of this type (open, but semi-sunk, with a staggered brick wall in the middle) were provided at the technical areas of the aerodrome, so that the need to take shelter could be held off as long as possible, and (relatively) easy access could be gained at that vital last minute. Note the two entrances opposite each other, with the staggered wall dividing the two sections.

The watch-office is to the right of the photograph, with another - possibly slightly earlier - satellite-type watch office to the left.
