THE SEA-WALL AND REMAINS OF THE 'ZAA' BATTERY MAGAZINE

Along the sea-wall showing the remains of the ZAA Magazine (probably the roof or base).

This concrete sea wall probably pre-dates the battery, and would probably have been erected by the ironworks to shore up the embankment (which has been lowered considerably) as it approached its highest point. The concrete slab lying above it is the base of (12) on the sketch, more than likely a magazine for the anti-aircraft ZAA batteries, one of which stood behind it, on the edge of the inland side of the bank.

The photograph is taken from a position slightly north of the south searchlight, which was installed just off the end of the sea-wall. Criffel can be observed quite clearly, 20-odd miles away over the Solway Firth on the Scottish side.
