HOME-GUARD DEFENCE MEDAL.

According to the 1957 edition of 'Ribbons and Medals' by Taprell Dorling, the colours signify the following:

'The ribbon is flame coloured, with green edges and a narrow black stripe in each green edge. The colours symbolise the enemy attacks upon our green and pleasant land, and the black represents the black-out all over the country.'

Service to qualify for the award counted from 3 Sept 1939 to 8 May 1945. The following categories - amongst others - were eligible:

• Members of the forces who had served in the UK.
• Personnel of the Anti-Aircraft Command.
• RAF personnel other than operational air crews.
• The Home Guard.
• Wardens Service including Shelter Wardens.
• Rescue Service.
• National Fire Brigade Service (including Auxiliary Fire Service prior to nationalisation).
• Royal Observer Corps.
