Presidents & the Law
With all the interest created by the sexual harassment case involving US President Bill Clinton, hypa has decided to look back through the archives to see how other American presidents have coped when faced with law suits.
George Washington - sued by the people of Rushmore City for the environmental damage caused to Mount Rushmore after he insisted on having his faced engraved in the mountain 100 meters high. Paid out $50,000 in damages.
Abraham Lincoln - sued by a major sportswear company after he described baseball caps as "stupid and daft". Made bankrupt.
Franklin Delano & Theodore Roosevelt - sued each other over the film and book rights to the Roosevelt name.
John F. Kennedy - out of court settlement with Marilyn Monroe regarding ownership of a swimming costume.
Richard Nixon - involved in a small and insignificant case which no one can remember much about.
Jimmy Carter - almost sued by the United Nations for giving ethical foreign policies a bad name.
Ronald Reagan - was subpoenaed to give evidence in the case of 'Johnson V's The Bad Actor's Guild of America'. Giving evidence, he used the phrase "I do not recall that" seventy six times.
George Bush - sued by the State of Texas for making Texans look uncultured after vomitting on the Japanese Prime Minister at a state banquet.
