Benchmark

veryard projects > sebpc > performance > benchmark

Benchmarking model

  • Seek ways of improving performance (operational, tactical)
  • Make tactical decisions (e.g. procurement, outsourcing)
  • Contract negotiations (e.g. outsourcing)
benchmarking process

Problems with benchmarks

Benchmarks encourage vendors to lop-sided development. Independent outfits run performance competitions, and this encourages vendors to put all their energies into improving the particular aspect of performance measured in that competition -- and neglecting other, less easily measured qualities.

In other words, you get what you measure. The benchmarks are not only inadequate as a way of comparing platforms from a user perspective, but pernicious as a way of miscommunicating user preferences back to the vendors.
