Formed in feudal Japan in Hokkaido by some renegades. They were
a mix of roin and outcasts from clans who banded together under Master
Nakamaro. He taught a philosophy of might is right and that the only way
they could ever amount to anything was to develop military strength.
The children were trained practically from birth, parents had little
contact with their children. They became an elite fighting force that
refused to give allegiance to anyone, living in seclusion and moved
around frequently. Master Nakamaro had a grudge against one of the clans and
wanted to use his people to strike against them in battle. A young man
of 18 saw the folly of this. In open battle they were hopelessly out
numbered. he tried to persuade the people to forsake Nakamaro, but few
would. In the end these few were the only survivors as Nakamaro and the
others were slaughtered.
The remaining group realised they would soon be killed if they stayed out in the open, so they simply disappeared. They were not heard from for 35 years when an old man was arrested for killing one of the greatest Samurai with his bear hands. He was released mysteriously, and the next day the clan leader of a rival clan was dead. The Assassins were born. No one who dealt with them knew who they were dealing with. Often people thought they were hiring mercenaries or simple cut throats. At other times they thought they were dealing with a loner who killed for money. It was over 200 years later when the guild proper formed. Previously they had few rules on membership, or technique. A new master took over who formalised their procedures. Training regimes that had existed for decades were abolished. He selected a hierarchy based on more than fighting ability and set for the tennent that only the best would survive. Many worthless members had been allowed to continue at low levels, now there was a maximum amount of time for basic training before the final test - one on one. Also the quality was assured by demanding assassins to produce at least three children by arranged marriage. these children were removed at birth. In order to grow the guild however it would always be necessary to allow outsiders in. A maximum age of 2 years was placed on those who could be taken in. It became common practice for children to be offered as payment for services and for children of victims to be taken back to the guild. There has been a 55% pass rate at the guild for hundreds of years. As those who fail die this forces certain rules for intake... Intake = current/2*3 + others if others = 0 then... current = 100 intake = 150 passes = 82 The guild would shrink by 18% per generation... As the guild grew steadily by roughly 10% this tells us : passes = 110 intake = 200 therefore for every 2 assassins from the guild there was one from outside. It should be noted that from reports at the time the vast majority of the failures came from the outsiders. Outsiders were looked down upon - they were in many ways not seen as part of the guild. Untill one eventually became the Master of the guild. Over the years the guild has held different rules in different regions. the expansion of the guild into america and europe was driven by outsiders who were brought into the guild and then volunterred to go out to their 'home' countries were they would not appear different and help set up new branches of the guild. Currently the worldwide guild intake policy is that every two assassins must produce 1 new member. doing the math, to maintain it's current size... intake = current/2 + outsiders if passes = 100 then intake = 180(ish) outsiders = 130 This means that as well as bringing forth a child each assassin would have to introduce at least one outsider (a child no older than 2). It is impossible to tell wether or not this is the case, but it has been suggested for some years now that the outsider intake is no where near close enough to maintain the current size. There have been several "re-organisations" in the last 200 years or so, since the no of shildren required was reduced to just 1 and it has been suggested that this was to cover up the fact that the guild is in fact shrinking. Another aspect which has worried many has been the rise in the number of outsiders which must now make it through training. even if every member were to pass (not the case) that would mean there would be 1 outsider for every member. this would not give the quality the guild aims for. Historically outsiders are not as honed as "true" assassins, and to up the outsider intake so much will naturally dillute the gene pool. One final point of interest, while possibly a simple miscalulation it defies any sane explanation. in the last 50 years the number of "true" assassins has been equal to 75% of the membership. which suggests that we have 25% more than we ought to have.... |
