The First DutyThe First Duty states that every assassin must give their first born child (male or female) to the Guild to be brought up by the Guild as an Assassin. This is how the majority of Assassins came to be members. The only other way to become a member of the Guild is to have been stolen as a baby, rather than given to the Guild. Every single assassin has been brought up by the guild since a very young age and does not know who their parents are. The Guild is father, mother, brother, and sister to them. The Life DutyThe Life Duty states that, when so ordered, two assassins (one male, one female) must sleep with each other as many times as neccessary until the female become pregnant. The baby produced in this manner must be handed over to the guild as in the First Duty. If either of the assassins has not yet carried out the First Duty at the point when they are ordered to carry out the Life Duty, this may be taken in place of the First Duty. However there is no limit to the number of times an assassin may be asked to carry out the Life Duty. The Rite of MajorityAt age 16 every assassin must prove that they are a worthy member of the guild in order to progress from being a Junior Member to being a Senior Member. There is a simple system to ensure that only the best assassins progress to being senior members - the junior members are paired with another junior member who has also reached the age of majority and they are sent out to the other end of the city. Whichever of the assassins brings the other's dead body back to the guild is considered the winner of the contest, and worthy of being a full senior member. This serves two purposes - it ensures that worst assassins are weeded out, and it reinforces the idea that the assassin takes orders from the Guild and that the guild is more important than friends and classmates. The ApprentishipAfter the assassin has passed the Rite of Majority they then have to serve a two year apprentiship. This is usually served at a different Guild Hall to the one in which they grew up. At this time the assassin also begins to live outside the guild hall, although they return every day for further training. This teaches the assassin many important skills in living on their own in an unusual environment, and allows them to learn many inter-personal skills that cannot be learned while living within the Guild. The GraduationAt the end of the two years the assassin must pass one more test before becoming a full member of the Guild. They are given an assassination mission to carry out, and on successful completion of the assassination, they are accepted into the Guild as full members. After graduation the assassin can ask to be assigned to any of the three Guild Halls, although there is no guarantee that they will receive the assignement they requested. At this time the assassin also becomes more independant, and is not required to attend the Guild every day for training (although the they will always be welcomed, and even encouraged to maintain their training at the Guild). The First YearFor the first year after graduation the assassin is cut off. He cannot go to the guild in this time, however he will be observed by instructors. There is no help for him in this time. He must make his own contacts, make his own money, and make his own friends. an assassin will never be asked to discuss what he did to survive in this time unless it ties in with some urgent guild matter. This is useful in allowing an assassin to blend into the area where he will eventually work without arousing suspicion. The year culminates with the presentation of the first honour mission. Once this mission is complete the assassin is welcomed back to guild. MissionsAfter graduation an assassin can begin to take paid missions from the Guild (although they may find their own employment if desired). All the missions that have been requested by the Guild's clients are kept in a database and assassins may request to be assigned to a specific mission. This is usually done on a first come, first served basis, although in special circumstances this may not apply. The pay for missions depends on the difficulty and time required for the mission and is worked out by the Guild. The price paid by client is calculated by the same method, although another 10% is added by the Guild as an adminsistration fee.Mission EtiquetteThe Assassin's Guild guarantees that if it takes a mission then the mission will be carried, no matter how many assassins this takes. If a time limit is set by the client, the Guild gurantees that the job will be done, and if it is not done by the time set by the client then their money will be refunded, and the Guild will still carry out the mission if it is still possible to do so. For this reason it is not considered good ettiquete to request assignements to missions for which the assassin is not qualified or experienced enough for. Equally it is not considered good ettiquette to request assignment to missions for which the assissin is over-qualified, as this reduces the pool of easier missions for the less qualified assassins to request. If a mission is not successfully carried by a Senior Member it falls to the Outer Circle to complete the mission. If the Outer Circle fails, then the Inner Circle must carry it out, and if they fail then either the Patriarch, or more often, the Guild Champion must carry out the mission. The Honour MissionTo honour the Guild that brought them up, every assassin must undertake one mission every year for the Guild without receiving any pay for the mission. This mission is assigned by the Guild and is not picked by the assassin. The Honour Mission may be asked of an assassin at any time in the year, and 12 months will not neccessarily have passed between any two missions. However the assassin is only required to undertake an average of one Honour Mission per year. The Guild may request that an assassin undertakes more than one Honour Mission in twelve months, and although the assassin is not required to accept further missions it is usually good etiquette to do so.The Rite of Single CombatIn any case where an assassin is charged with a crime against the Guild they may choose the Rite of Single Comabt to determine the truth. The accused may challange the accuser to single comabt, and the winner of the bout will be considered to have been telling the truth. The accused must always fight their own single combat, but a more senior member can choose to fight in place of the accuser. Single Combat can also be used to settle arguments between assassins, in which case the people involved in the argument must always be the ones to fight. Depending on the severity of the accusation or argument the single combat may range from a simple submission or knockout, to a fight to the death. The person challenged to Single Combat always has the right to choose the weapons, although in matters that require a fight to the death it is traditional to use the katana. The Patriarch's permission is always required for a fight to the death to take place, although a fight to the first blood does not require his permission. The Rite of SeparationIn cases where an assassin has shown gross negligence, endangered the Guild, or brought shame on the Guild, they can be thrown out of the Guild. They are stripped of all weapons, clothing, and personal items and sent from the Guild Hall. One hour after they have been thrown out of the Guild a mission is placed in the mission database putting a price on the ronin's head. All assassins may attempt the job, irrespective of level, and often groups of less experienced assassins group together to try and take out a ronin and split the pay. All assassins have a duty to report a ronins location to the guild, and if the opportunity presents itself they must attempt to kill the ronin. Should the ronin survive for one year and one day from the time they were made ronin then they are free of the guild, and the mission is removed from the databases. No assassin may then attempt to kill the ronin unless a client pays for the mission, or the ronin commits another crime against the Guild.Occassionally a ronin may request to return to the Guild after the year and the day have passed, and if the Patriarch accepts them then they may return to the Guild as a full Senior Member. |
