The Bowline Knot.

A knot normally used to attach the free end of a life line to a harness.

Stage 1. Form a loop with the free end placed in front.

A rhyme to help you remember. Mumble the rhyme as you tie the knot.

"First make a tree with a rabbit hole."

Stage 2. Feed the free end through the loop.

"The rabbit comes out of its hole........"

Stage 3. Pass the free end around the back of the opposite end.

"and goes around the back of the tree......."

Stage 4. Feed the free end back through the loop.

"and jumps back down its hole."

Stage 5. Tighten the knot and use the loop as the support.  A suitable stop knot such as a figure of eight would be used on the remaining free end to prevent it slipping through should the knot become loose.
