Walk Leaders

Frank DRIVER: Frank is an experienced rambler and often described as a 'doughty veteran' by others who hope they will be able to walk as well as he does when they reach his age ! Frank began leading in 1997(Phone 01706 216769) Unfortunately, Frank is currently unwell due to a serious accident. We all hope he can return to walking as soon as he is fit.

Alan JOHNSON: Founder secretary of the group, Alan also likes to lead the occasional walk ! His favourite areas are the moors above Bacup where he keeps a careful watch on the quarrying activities that are going on there. He and his wife Jean are also hardy campaigners against windfarms which are threatening the area.(Phone 01706 877521)

Keith PICKUP: Founder member and original Footpath Secretary, Keith does not get out as often as he would like because of other, musical, interests. He does however continue to lead our walks and is extremely popular. His speciality is the first walk of the new year and come the millennium, he will be carrying the baton for the Festival of Winter Walks.(Phone 01706 226090)

Gretchen PYVES: A keen walker of great experience, Gretchen has been persuaded to branch out into leading and has shown us some of her favourite walks this year. She has also been persuaded to be a member of the committee and we look forward to that. She has a cool head in an emergency for which some people in particular are very grateful and for which she won a special award this year.(Phone 01706 214018)

Reg RATTAN: Our recently retired chairman who can best be described as a 'real gentleman' . Reg began leading in '98 shortly after recovering from an ankle injury. The 17 mile walk he led in January that year proved that he was fully recovered ! He seems to be spending a great deal of time globetrotting, hence his retirement as chairman.(Phone 01706 216521)

Bertha and Jim Rostron: Bertha and Jim are the most experienced leaders in the group with firm roots in both mountaineering and climbing in the Scottish Highlands. They are founder leaders and their contribution is invaluable. They also do a terrific slide show.(Phone 01706 215543)

Richard SUMNER: Arguably the most popular leader, Richard has won the 'Best Walk' certificate two years on the trot but had his crown snatched this year. Richard's enthusiasm and experience touch us all and his walks are among the most original and challenging. He has organised holidays in Scotland and Ireland for the group over the last three years(Phone 01706 823764)

Ian TATTERSALL: This is Ian's first season of leading walks but after joining the Rossendale Ramblers the year before, he was persuaded not only to join the committee but also the ranks of the leaders. He has now been persuaded to become chairman and is wondering what will happen next year! An experienced walker with a good repertoire of jokes and an even better gift when it comes to repairing cars. Like Gretchen he has a cool head in an emergency and is a whizz-kid with satellite navigation and this won him a special award this year.(Phone 01706 830001)

Walter WAIDE: Walter tends to lead local walks so that he can keep an eye on his footpath 'domain'. He also tends to go for 'classic' walks that everybody recognises and wants to be able to say they've 'got the T shirt' for. He was pleased to snatch the 'Walk of the Year' from Richard this year for his Crinkle Crags/Bow Fell walk. (Phone 01706 228681)
