The Rossendale Rambler

NATIONAL EVENTS.

Footpath Rally - Ripon.
On Sunday 9 April the Ramblers' Association will be holding a Footpath Rally at a hillside on the outskirts of Lightwater Valley Theme Park, North Stainley, Ripon, North Yorkshire (on the A6108 between Ripon and Masham). The rally will start at 11.30am, with speeches from Andrew Bennett MP, among others, at midday. Ramblers should bring a packed-lunch and drinks. There will be walks on offer after the rally.

The aim of the rally will be to show North Yorkshire County Council, and all other highway authorities, that there is huge public support for our footpath heritage. If thousands of people come to the rally, highway authorities will feel under a great deal of pressure to get their paths re-opened and on the definitive map. We expect a great deal of media interest in the event, and not Just in North Yorkshire. If your Area is able to send ramblers to the rally, RA central office will contact your local papers and get local publicity for your paths.

Kinder Scout Anniversary Walk .
A walk to commemorate the anniversary of the Kinder Scout mass trespass will be held on Easter Monday, 24th April 2000. This will be a terrific day out and a timely celebration of the famous mass trespass that took place in the Peak District in 1932.

This historic event raised the public profile of the freedom to roam campaign at the time and has now become a symbol of the desire felt by many for a legal freedom to walk in open uncultivated countryside. This anniversary falls at a time of significant progress in the hundred and fifteen year campaign. Further details will be available nearer the time.

If anyone is interested in going to either of these events please contact me and I will let you have further details. Ed.
