aquarianA new list of topics provided by Aquarian Fishfoods

Before you decide to keep Tropical fish please read the following

Remember that fish are living creatures and need to be kept in clean, healthy conditions. Keeping Tropical Fish is a most enjoyable, and rewarding hobby. Given the correct living conditions, fish will live a very long time.

Do not attempt to keep fish if you are not prepared to spend a little time on the following points.

1. Changing some water each week is THE most important chore to keeping fish. Would you expect to thrive living in your own excrement.

2. Feeding the correct foods regularly

3. Looking around the tank to check if everything is well. Check if the fish look well and are behaving normally. check if the water is the correct temperature and the filter is still working normally.

4. Exercise patience in allowing the tank to mature

Do BEG, BORROW OR BUY a good book on "Beginning" Tropical Fishkeeping, This page will eventually Be A good help but it will take a long time.

Further items to take into consideration are as follows.

A suitable position for the aquarium see site for the aquarium

A very strong and rigid support for the aquarium see aquarium stands

A convenient supply of electricity see electricity

That a supply of water is not too far away, carrying buckets long distance will soon take the fun out of it and the fish will suffer.

Selecting a site for your new Aquarium

The aquarium should be sited in a convenient spot, where you can gain access to it for maintenance. It should also be sited out of direct sunshine, not near a window which would cause a rapid build up of algae, and could cause overheating. It should also be local to electricity supplies and within hose distance of a supply of clean water. Also avoid siting in cold draughts.

Choosing the Aquarium

There are some obvious reasons for the size of the aquarium. It might be the size of the fish to be kept in it, or the size of the available space or the funds necessary to purchase the equipment etc.

It is worth remembering that the larger the tank the easier to maintain. It should not be less than 12" x 12" x 24" and preferably larger. The deeper a tank, the more difficult to keep clean because you cannot reach the bottom easily whilst trying to look through the front glass. It is also more difficult and more expensive to provide sufficiently strong light to grow plants, 18" in depth being the deepest for fluorescent tube lights.

Stands for the Aquarium

Strong supports are required for the tank. One gallon (U.K.) weighs about 10 lbs, multiply this by the number of gallons and you begin to see the reason for strong supports. The stand should also be very level, this will prevent excess strain on the tank structure and also makes sure the water is level in the tank. Not much looks worse than the water at one end of the tank being lower than the level at the other end.

I have managed to get a series of articles from Aquarian the world famous fishfood manufacturers which will be of great interest to both begginners and experienced fish keepers.
