Miller's Dale is a small village set below the viaduct built to carry the old railway across the dale. Use the car park at the old station which is just off the main road up by the Monsal Trial. This was a four platform station where passengers changed from fast trains from the south of England on to a slow sight seeing tour. The sweating engines must have been spectacular in this wonderful landscape. The railway line, closed by Beeching, is now the Monsal Trail. Now might be a good time to have lunch away from the busy places in the town.
1) The Anglers Rest - has a good menu of both bar snacks and hot meals. A short walk along the Monsal trail towards Bakewell will bring you to a sign post and steps down to Millers Dale leading you to the pub. They do have their own car park which is just off the road to the right if you prefer. 2) The Wriggly Tin Cafe - has a wide selection of sandwiches, drinks, snacks and cakes, open from Easter to the end of October. It is just outside the station car park on the road. This building was part of the temporary village of Birchinlee built for the people who constructed the damns in the Upper Derwent Valley early this century. It was transported here and used as the station cafe. It now has a preservation order on it. 3) The Old Staion - there are picnic tables, toilets and information boards here and so if you are prepared and if the sun is shining it is difficult to think of a more beautiful place to enjoy a picnic. A walk along the Monsal Trail is wonderful, especially when the flowers are out between May and September. Some of the species you can expect to see are primroses, cowslips, orchids and Jacob's ladder and the scenery is breathtaking. Alternatively have a look round the gallery at Craft Supplies down on the main road which has a wonderful range of stock for anybody interested in making things from wood. |
