Sippu
Mahou Daisakusen
is the second game in the Mahou Daisakusen
shooter series by Raizing. Raizing's games are
famed among shooter fans for their style,
immaculately honed gameplay, and fantastic
attention to graphical detail, and 'Sippu' aka Kingdom
Grandprix is no exception.
Whereas the first game of the trilogy, Mahou
Daisakusen (1993) itself,
was a straightforward vertical shooter (if a very
good one) this game takes the form of a bizarre
but highly original 'shooter-racing' hybrid set
in a fantasy kingdom, where eight contestants
must race against the clock and each other, while
blasting their way through a host of surreal
levels, enemies and bosses to the finish line. By
the way it took me forever to track down this
Saturn game - however recently Kingdom Grand Prix
was emulated, along with its prequel Mahou
Daisakusen in Raine.. which is good news for
Shooter/Emulation fans everywhere! Equally great
news is that the third game in the series- Great
Mahou Daisakusen
(2000) - is now in arcades running on Capcom's
CPS 2 board and is thus a possible candidate for
home conversion to the Dreamcast..mmm!!
