Red Clover Red Clover is a herb that has traditionally been used for female reproductive problems, for skin conditions and for mouth and throat problems. The herb has gained further interest recently due to research that shows it has a similar effect to Tamoxifen on breast cancer cells, in that it inhibits their growth. In fact, studies have shown that using Tamoxifen and Red Clover together has an effect greater that using both alone. They seem to act synergistically. Although Red Clover traditionally has been thought to have oestrogenic properties – and benefits for PMS, menopause, and breast swelling, tenderness or nodules – the effect upon the oestrogen receptors is a complicated one, and because of this it seems to inhibit the oestrogenic effect upon breast cancer cells. Other important uses of Red Clover are in skin conditions, eczema or psoriasis, and in mouth and throat conditions such as sore throat, mouth ulcers and other similar conditions. It may also be useful in coughs, including whooping cough. Red Clover is often used in combination with other herbs for a number of conditions, but may be used alone, either as a tincture, capsule, or a herbal tea.
