The history
of Beeston Hills Lodge is an interesting one. The poet Sir
Stephen Spender lived here when he was a child. One of
his poems was reputedly inspired by a childhood experience at the
house, when, during the Second World War, an enemy bomb landed
nearby in Sheringham and the tommies on duty at the pill-box on
the green rescued the Spender children from the lodge.
It is also
believed that Lloyd George, once British prime minister and a
close friend of Sir Stephen Spender's father, has stayed at the
house.
The Reverend
Horne, father of Kenneth Horne, the journalist , writer &
frontman of the radio show "Around the Horne" which
starred actors such as the late Kenneth Williams (famous veteran
of the "Carry on "films), lived here too.
The current owner's
family ancestry is interesting too as one of their family was a
king of Poland. They were also acquainted with Picasso and
Robert Graves, the poet, mystic and author of "I
Claudius". The present owner's husband, an artist,
writer and poet, has appeared on television and radio as a guest
and singer.
