Holidays and short breaks in the North of England

Curlew logo

The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales offer some of the finest walking and hiking in Great Britain.

Hadrian’s Wall combines centuries of history with fine Northumberland scenery. The Eden Valley is a quiet oasis little-known to all but the most discerning. We have been welcoming guests to our wonderful countryside since 1997.

Our experience and local knowledge will show you places and features often missed by others. You will see reminders of a fascinating and often turbulent past - from castles and stone circles to historic churches or houses. Seasoned walker or newcomer, there is something here for everyone.

Accommodation

Chosen for quality, location and warmth of welcome with VisitBritain ratings or local equivalent. Rooms are en-suite rooms with single rooms available without supplement. Evening meals will be available close by.

Walks, Groups & Leaders

Leaders select walks carefully taking into account weather and group fitness. We include stops to appreciate views, interesting features and for breaks with usually a cosy tea room at the end! Experience is not necessary but you do need to be reasonably fit and active. If you have doubts about which grade is right for you please ask:

Moderate: include valley walking and lower or less demanding summits. Paths are generally good but may include short rough or steep sections. Typically: 7-10 miles (11-16 km) with 500 - 1,500 feet (150 - 500m) of ascent.

Moderate Plus: for more experienced or active guests wanting to tackle higher hills or walk further. Typically: 12miles (20 km) or over 2,000 feet (600m) of ascent with some pathless terrain or rough ground.

Groups include singles, couples and friends from Britain or further afield, often returning for repeat holidays. They are small enough to ensure individual attention.

Leaders have detailed knowledge of the landscape, natural history and history of the area. They know where the sights "off the beaten track" are and will provide you with ideas for your non-walking day. For your safety they carry a first aid kit, emergency shelter and mobile phone.
