EDGES MAGAZINE Issue 16

December 1998

EDITORIAL
I would like to thank all our readers for the support they have given us this year. You have played an important part in helping to produce Edges magazine. Without your donations it would be impossible to produce this publication

Father Jim McCartnet, Editor
As well as giving a platform to people all over the country, so that they can share their views on marginalisation and isolation, we also have practical projects for homeless people and those who suffer from drug addiction. This year we have set up a new project called Reconcile. This helps the chaotic drug user escape from homelessness and addiction, into rehabilitation. Several young people are now building new lives thanks to your generous support. They have left behind a history of crime and drugs and are now looking at life in a positive way.

An important aspect of our work is entering into dialogue with socially excluded people throughout the U.K. In November we had the ear of two Government Ministers, Jack Straw, the Home Secretary and Lord Williams of Mostyn, Minister of State for Prisons and Probation. Jack Straw presented our magazine's awards and Lord Williams of Mostyn was the guest speaker at our second annual conference in Oxford.

In this edition of Edges we explore gay issues. Also, we invite contributors from Ireland to express their thoughts. It was very moving when my phone rang three days before going to print, and at the other end was a desperate mother in search of her missing daughter. In this edition we speak about the night Ciara went missing.

Thank you for taking an interest in Edges. A special thanks goes to Gabriel Communications for distributing it for us.

Happy Christmas to all.
