From Prison into Rehab

Steven is in the T.H.O.M.A.S. Rehab Unit

I came to T.H.O.M.A.S. from Burnley Crown Court where I was charged with burglary. I did 5 months remand in Preston prison. I hit my rockbottom of drugs and crime and I asked for help. They gave me a 2 years rehab programme. I hit my rock-bottom in prison. I looked at the older lads there and I thought that I didn’t want to be there when I was that age or die outside. I was in a bail hostel in Accrington and I had a habit; I was here and there shoplifting. I went into the public toilets in Accrington and injected heroin, not intending to overdose, but I did. The next thing that I remember was being resuscitated and electric pads on me. That was another rock-bottom. I was depressed and I thought it was for a big change.

That’s why I’ve come to T.H.O.M.A.S. Since coming here, so far I have discovered after finishing Step 1 of the 12 Step programme that I’m learning to manage my own life on life’s terms, how to live a normal life with structure in it; I’ve discovered that I’m powerless over any drug, over any mind-altering chemicals. I know that I can’t tough any of them. At the moment, I’m looking to the future and I realise that I need support out there. It’s what I asked for. With the 12 steps, hopefully and going into the Inward House project with a day-to-day structure that is what I need. I completed a Level 1 counselling course before the drugs and I hope to go back to college to do that. Now that my mind is clear I need to look to the future and get a new life.
