THOMAS HOUSE

THOMAS House is a supportive residential recovery centre for men who are striving to deal with their drug and alcohol addiction and live a total abstinent lifestyle. The community consists of people in recovery and works in partnership with Aspire who provide a structured day programme.

Our therapeutic community encourages you to learn from everyday living, how to manage your life free from substance misuse. You will join a group dynamic made up of people who have drug and alcohol problems. They will help you to verbalise your thoughts and feelings rather than act them out behaviourally.

You will have the opportunity to talk openly about past situations that made you feel angry or of low self-worth and recognise ways in which your present behaviours can change. Staff and peer members will offer supportive identifications and make suggestions on how to handle such situations more constructively.

You will be introduced to the 12 Step Principles.  Our peer mentors are ex-addicts living in total abstinence and giving an in-depth experience of how they apply the “12 Step Principles” to their every day life.

The aim of this approach is to put across an understanding of applying this model of manageability to real life. This approach works by changing an addict’s beliefs about his or her relationship to others and to self.

This changed perspective occurs by self–reflection and the development of new coping skills that can be embraced through engagement on the programme.

The primary aim of this approach is a lifetime abstinence from mood altering chemicals.

The goal is achieved by staying connected to NA & AA, which is considered critical for long term abstinence.

We will introduce you to this network.

Duration of Programme

The programme will last 4 months after which we will help you find your own accommodation and offer you  support  to live independently.

Each resident will be provided with a:

  • Keyworker
  • Support Plan
  • Action Plan

Aspire will provide the residents of the THOMAS House access to a range of psycho social interventions through the Aspire programmes. These will include an intensive recovery group work programme which aims to address relapse avoidance and introduction to the 12 Steps approach.

The programme relies heavily on use of tools developed as part of the International Treatment Effectiveness Pilot (ITEP Mapping). In addition Aspire will work with residents on activity and skills-based work to improve well being and sustain recovery such, as arts based programmes, relaxation and complementary therapies.
