ANDREWS

One of my maternal great-great-grandmothers was Emma Andrews (1849-1929). She was born at Mersham, the daughter of Edward Andrews (1813-84) and Jane GOWER (1812-92).

Emma Andrews (1849-1929) married Alfred Peter VALDER at Mersham in 1869. They had eight children, moving to Sussex half way through. See the Kent and Sussex Valder pages for more details.
Edward Andrews (1813-84) married Jane GOWER at Hythe in 1833. They had 11 children at Mersham most of whom survived childhood, nine are known to have married and had families. Edward worked as a sawyer and also owned some houses, qualifying him to vote. Edward left a will and very helpfully named all his married daughters. To date 57 grandchildren of Edward and Jane have been traced. Where are all their descendants?
I am in contact with two: Mia Maguire of Buckinghamshire is descended from the tenth child, George Andrews (1851-1935), and his wife Elizabeth EARL (1852-1944), they married in 1872. I am indebted to Mia for much of the following Andrews information, a lot of it has been gleaned from wills, the Andrews appear to have been minor landowners and shopkeepers. Sylvie Knight of Sussex is descended from the third child, Margaret Andrews (1836-?), who married Thomas POST (1827-?) in 1853.
The other siblings were: Charlotte (married John REVELL), Jane Elizabeth (married George BLACKWELL), Edward (married Elizabeth TAYLOR from Yorkshire), Henry (married Mary Ann HILLS), Lucy (married Francis BEAZLEY from Sussex) and Mary Anne (married Frederick SWAFFER).
The Revells and the Posts moved around in west Kent, Edward Andrews moved to Folkestone, Henry and George remained at Mersham, the Beazleys moved to south London and the Swaffers moved to Ashford.
It is not known where the Blackwells went, it is rumoured that George Blackwell was the brother of Elizabeth Blackwell who was the first woman to graduate as a doctor in the USA. These Blackwells were born at Bristol in Somerset and emigrated to the USA as children. Several of them later returned to England including Elizabeth; she founded several hospitals in London and died at Hastings, Sussex.

Edward Andrews senior (1813-84) was the fourth son of Henry Andrews (1785-1817) and lizabeth BACK (1786-1853) who married at Westwell in 1804. Elizabeth Back was probably Henry Andrews's first cousin, the daughter of William Back who had married Henry Andrews senior's younger sister, Elizabeth Andrews, in 1779. Edward Andrews (1813-84) had a twin sister Charlotte Andrews (1813-97) who married William FERRIDGE (1806-45); Beulah Caswell of Saskatchewan, Canada is a descendant of William and Charlotte Ferridge. Henry and Elizabeth had five other children but their descendants are not known with any great certainty. After Henry Andrews's death in 1817 it is believed that his wife Elizabeth had several other children; one was John Andrews in 1821. John Andrews had seven children and four grandchildren have also been discovered.

Henry Andrews (1785-1817) was the fourth child of the seven born to Henry Andrews (1759-1821) and Elizabeth BOURNE (1755-1826?). Henry Andrews senior and Elizabeth married at Boughton Aluph in 1779. Marriages are known for four of their other children but their descendants are not known.

Henry Andrews senior (1759-1821) was the fourth child of Stephen Andrews (1710-91) and Susan NORTON. They married at Boughton Aluph in 1744 and had five children there. Their youngest child, Elizabeth, married William BACK as mentioned above.

Stephen Andrews (1710-91) was the son of Thomas Andrews and Deborah WHITEWOOD. Mia has more information about our earlier ancestors but some of it remains to be proven.
