GUY

One of my maternal great-great-great-grandmothers may have been Martha GUY (1821-aft. 1881). Martha was born at Horningsham, Wiltshire, the sixth child of James GUY (1782-aft. 1851) and Elizabeth CROUCH (1782-aft. 1851).

Martha Guy married George KING (1814-bef.1881) at Horningsham in 1845. They had at least eight children at Frome, Somerset which is only a few miles from Horningsham. It is not known for certain that their daughter Amanda was the mother of the Edward OLLIVER who was my great-grandfather.

James Guy (1782-aft. 1851) and Elizabeth Crouch married at Horningsham in 1810. Elizabeth Crouch (1782-aft. 1851) was born at Maiden Bradley which is two miles south of Horningsham. James and Elizabeth had one daughter and four sons at Horningsham before having Martha, two more daughters were born later. James and Elizabeth were both still alive in 1851, one of their unmarried sons, Joseph, was living with them at Horningsham. James described himself as a Woodman and Joseph was a besom maker. James's brother, Samuel (1771-aft. 1851), was living nearby, he was a yeoman with four acres of land. Eliza, James and Elizabeth's oldest child was living with Samuel, she was unmarried.

James Guy (1782-?) was the sixth known child (of seven) of Joseph Guy (1734?-?) and Joan/Jane ADLAM (1744?-?) who married at Horningsham in 1768. Joseph Guy (1734?-?) was probably baptised at Horningsham, son of Samuel but it's not certain. The records are a little unclear, it's possible that Samuel had another three earlier children there but there are large gaps between Joseph and the last of those (in 1725). One of the earlier ones was Jeremy (1713). The original parish registers have not been examined, this information is from the BVRI.

There are two possibilities for Samuel Guy at Horningsham. One baptised in 1691, son of Jeremiah, the other baptised in 1695, son of Samuel and Elizabeth. Either would fit well with the names used in the next generation. Earlier Guys at Horningsham do not feature the first names of either Samuel or Jeremiah.

I have not done any research at Trowbridge, that will have to wait until I have proved that my Edward Olliver was a grandson of Martha Guy. I have only looked at the 1841 and 1851 censuses for Horningsham, later ones have not been examined.
