Misericordia
Anne Marie Summers and Stephen Tyler - players of early music

Since forming in 1993, the duo Misericordia have concentrated on exploring the vast repertoire of music and song from medieval Europe. Their previous and ongoing interest in folk music and improvisation have helped in the development of their unique musical style which, while keeping faith with the original scores, leaves much scope for individual interpretation.

From the driving rhythms of the hurdy gurdy to the melancholic meanderings of the harp and gemshorn, their concerts have a hypnotic and evocative charm taking the listener into another time. No two performances are alike and a sense of excitement and immediacy is maintained throughout.

One of the distinguishing features of a Misericordia concert is their choice and range of instrumentation. This includes bagpipes, shawms, hurdy gurdy, harp, saz, percussion, and various woodwind.

As well as performing concerts in churches, castles and halls throughout the country, Misericordia also appear at early music festivals, historical fairs and other outdoor events (complete with medieval clothing and tent), storytelling events, and at English Heritage sites. Workshops are also available in medieval instrumental music, song and singing for dancing.

Special programmes are provided for schools.
