omfrey
Cream, for Sprains and Bruises.
A country name for Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)
was ‘Knitbone’ reflecting its use in healing fractures.
The herb contains allantoin which encourages bone, cartilage and muscle
cells to grow. When the crushed herb is applied to the skin the allantoin
diffuses through and speeds up the healing.
Comfrey baths were popular in the past before marriage to repair the
hymen and thus ‘restore virginity’
Comfrey contains Mucilage, steroidal saponins, allantoin, tannins, pyrollizidine
alkaloids, inulin, vitamin B12 and proteins.
Comfrey acts as a cell stimulant, astringent, demulcent, expectorant and
wound healer
By combining the herb in a beeswax cream base it is excellent for the
treatment of bruises, sprains, bone and muscle damage and osteoarthritis
