GETTING BUNNY NEUTERED
- Neutered rabbits live longer than unaltered rabbits Up to 85% of females develop reproductive cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian) by the age of 4 or 5 if they are not spayed. Neutered males live longer too as they will be less likely to fight with rabbits, cats and other animals.
- Neutering does not change a rabbit's personality If anything your bunny will be happier and easier to manage.
- Neutered rabbits make better companions They are calmer and more affectionate once the urge to mate has been removed. They also become less aggressive and less inclined to chew and dig.
- Better litter-training habits Neutered rabbits gradually stop spraying and are more reliably house-trained than unaltered rabbits.
- Neutered rabbits can live together Unaltered rabbits cannot safely have a friend of the same or opposite sex due to sexual and aggressive behaviour triggered by hormones. Do not wait until the rabbits start fighting to have them neutered, as by then it is usually too late to restore their relationship.
- Neutered rabbits won't contribute to the problem of overpopulation Sadly there are many more wonderful rabbits than there are responsible people to care for them. By not breeding from your rabbit, you will give rabbits at rescue centres a better chance of being rehomed.
- Neutering and spaying is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced rabbit veterinarian Provided your rabbit is healthy, s/he can be neutered or spayed with very little risk. Do not allow a veterinarian with little or no experience with rabbits to neuter your pet. Male rabbits can be neutered as soon as the testicles descend (3/4 months old) and females can be spayed at around 5/6 months. If your rabbit is over two years old, ask your vet to do a blood test before neutering.
Important Note Neutered male rabbits can still get a female pregnant for 3 weeks after surgery. Spayed females should not be placed with a male (even a neutered one) for two weeks to avoid internal damage during mating. Rabbits become sexually mature from 10-12 weeks, depending on the breed.Get The Rabbit Habit!
