From
Yanuca you can surf Frigates Passage. Frigates is an amazing
left, easily as good as Cloudbreak, and less exclusive. We
had one of the best sessions of the entire trip here, Ric
catching the wave of his trip. John, an American with a cruisy
job whom we became friends with at Seashell Cove, managed
to score a day of near perfect waves at Frigates a couple
of days after we left, while Simon
and Jeremy only managed to get the one really good day
like us.
The
evening meals on Yanuca are beautiful, cooked in a lovo every
night. We used to catch fish for our dinner as we motored
our way out to the reef every day. Yanuca is a rustic island
retreat, with very basic accommodation
and facilities. It really feels as if it could be your own
little tropical island in the middle of nowhere. It's proper
picture postcard stuff.
The
island was the busiest that it had ever been while we were
there. There were around 20 people staying. Normally the number
of guests is only in single figures. The numbers were good
in one way though, we managed to chip together enough money
to get the Yanuca firewalkers to perform a traditional firewalking
ceremony. Apparently it was the first time in 2 years that
the tradition had been performed on the island. We were all
a bit sceptical, but believe me, the stones that they were
walking over really were white hot. I found out the hard way
after burning my hand. Unfortunately the winds decided to
blow onshore for 3 days in a row, so after probably the best
day's surfing on the entire trip we decided to return to Seashell
Cove.
