Renaissance | The rebirth or rediscovery of antiquity in the fifteenth
century, coinciding with a break with the mediaeval.
Zizek points to a vicious circle: the new zeitgeist formed itself through the influence of antiquity, which enabled renaissance thought to shatter the mediaeval chains; yet for this influence to be felt, the new zeitgeist must already have been active. |
Rediscovery | For example, national identity. The thing returns to itself. Zizek sees this as a tautological gesture - a symbolic act. |
