Monday 9th - Friday 13th February 1998 at 7.30pm

Books and Lyrics by Bill Owen
Music by Tony Russell
Set in 1888, THE MATCHGIRLS is a stirring piece of music theatre that tells the story of the strike by female workers at the Bryant and May match factory in the heart of London's East End. Appaled by the harsh working conditions and low wages, Kate, one of the workers, organises the girls in a fight forthier rights, aided by Annie Besant a leading socialist campaigner of the time. As the strike gathers momentum Kate is torn between her responsibilities to her fellow workers and the chance of personal happiness and a new start in America with Joe, a docker who feels England's class system cannot be changed especiallyby striking women.
THE MATCHGIRLS is both a haunting and exuberant musical and a hard hitting social documentary that follows last year's sell out musical success of POPPY by Studio Youth Theatre.
