The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) is the national governing body for rock climbing, hillwalking and mountaineering.
In conjunction with the Mountain Leader Training Board (MLTB) it offers qualifications for those wishing to lead or supervise other people.

SINGLE PITCH AWARD (SPA)

• Qualifies the candidate to supervise others on single pitch crags and climbing walls

• Covers such skills as choice of venue, rope management, correct use of equipment, group management, emergency procedures, crag etiquette, access and conservation.

• Training and assessment courses last a minimum of twenty hours.

• Candidates are expected to gain and log extensive supervisory and personal climbing experience prior to assessment. Every opportunity should be taken to practise the skills acquired during training.

The Rock Centre runs SPA training and assessment courses throughout the year both midweek and at weekends.
