These pages are not intended as a spiritual pilgrimage to a Lakeland guru but will evolve into a database of useful links, information and memoirs about a very special man.  It is up to you to decide what kind of man he was.  Not everyone has fond memories of AW and a significant few even detested his seeming hidebound approach.  Although I never met the man in person, those I have spoken to, vouch for AW’s single admiration of The Lakes.  He was of course, born in a world far detached from ours, and even those cynical critics should credit AW for his single-minded and incredible labour of love which culminated in his Pictorial Guides and other works.  Without his passion, many of us might never have set foot upon the Lakeland fells and even if we had, our appreciation of the mountains would have lacked all of AW’s observations and attentions to detail.  For instance, who would have ventured into the remote confines near Peer’s Ghyll, ascended the spiring turrets on Striding Edge and even ambled along the valley bottom near Rosthwaite.  To many, AW means Lakeland and it is with this in mind that these pages now continue….
