THE WAINWRIGHT SOCIETY

“I will lift up mine eyes

unto the hills.

With the bereavement of AW in 1991 the closure of one of Lakeland’s most famous chapters came to an end.  With over fifty of AW’s publications on the shelves of many, AW had a legacy for which he should have been proud. 

 

The Wainwright Society was inaugurated on November 9th 2002, exactly fifty years after AW climbed Dove Crag to make notes for his first guide.  One hundred interested individuals gathered in the youth  hostel at Ambleside to hear Eric Robson chair proceedings for the official formation of the society.  At the meeting the following positions were elected:

 

1. Chairman - Eric Robson

2. Secretary - Peter Linney

3. Membership Secretary - Morag Clement

4. Treasurer - Phillip Hull

5. Press and Publicity - John Burland

6. Webmaster - Robert Jackson

7. Life President - Betty Wainwright

8. Patron - Hunter Davies

 

 

Afterwards many people followed in AW’s footsteps to re-enact the famous walk taken by AW.  The OFC were part of this gathering and the walk can be retraced on the Internet at the OFC and Andrew Leaney’s Fellwalking site – click on the links below to access these pages directly:-
