E.WAINWRIGHT

Behind every great man…

I felt it was appropriate to devote at least some space to AW’s wife Betty.  For many years she was a stalwart supporter of his work and especially in Scotland she was an invaluable aid at the wheel of her car – with this in mind, the last line at the end of this page is one of my AW favourites, from the book, Wainwright in Scotland.  With the formation of the Wainwright Society, Betty was nominated as Life President – a position that she is very proud to fulfil.  With the publication of the guides by Francis Lincoln, Betty stated, “I am delighted that the new publisher has local connections and I’m sure that AW would have been very pleased.”

Betty closely follows developments concerning her late husband’s books and most things Lakeland. She is a very enthusiastic person and has given her blessing to the Wainwright Society and sends her best wishes on the continuing growth of the OFC.

It is perhaps fitting to end this page using AW’s own words, “It is all over.  Home James.  Or, in my case, Home, Betty.”
