OCTOBER 2008

Dear Friends,

At this time of year in our Churches we celebrate Harvest. As rural Churches perhaps we are more aware of this festival than many town or city Churches might be. We can walk past fields with crops and, perhaps like others of you, from my house I can hear sheep and cattle. It is right on our doorstep and yet there is a danger that we underestimate the importance of the harvest because for most of us the link between a good harvest and having enough to eat has been broken.

Whatever happens to the crops around us we can still go to Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s and buy pretty much what we want. From time to time we may see that the price has gone up and hear that it is due to bad harvests in Australia or the USA but most of us, most of the time, can still get plenty to eat. Our country is among the richer nations of the world and so if there is a shortage of food around the world and prices go up we are still fortunate enough to be able to buy it. For others, of course, it is not the same. In many of the poor countries of the world people spend a huge percentage of their income on food and when prices go up sometimes they can barely afford enough.

The breaking of this link can lead to us feeling as if we are quite capable of looking after ourselves without being dependent on anyone or anything else. That can feel quite good but it is actually misleading because ultimately none of us is completely independent. Whether we believe in God or not, we need others – including the people in other parts of the world who grow food, and of course the earth that produces the food. In the end this is why Christians, along with believers of many faiths give God thanks at Harvest time and recognise the need to care for the planet and to support those who do not have enough.
