ST PETER’S CHURCH FLOWER ROTA :

After serving for many years as Flower Organiser at Barford, Jo Burman has retired and put away her scissors. The Flower Arranging Team would like to express their thanks to Jo for her guidance, expertise and generosity and wish her a happy retirement.

There are still some free spaces on the flower rota at the back of church - great skill is not required, but enthusiasm would be an advantage and volunteers would be most welcome. In the past we have been able to offer a flower arranging service for weddings and the Churchwardens are hopeful that this service may continue - if there are enough people with the skill to do this.

If you think that you could spare the time and are willing to volunteer on an occasional basis, then they would like to hear from you.

Contact Denise Godfrey 411957 or Pam Harrison.

Access at these times may be difficult on Saturday 5th July.

CHURCHYARD/ CEMETERY MAP :

Barford Heritage Group has a detailed database of the memorial inscriptions in the churchyard and cemetery.

Now Barford WI has kindly offered to map the graves so once the weather is drier and warmer, do not be alarmed if you see ladies with balls of string, pegs and clipboards on their knees amongst the graves. It is only the WI ladies at work!

CHURCH WATER BILLS :

Canon Richard Williams, Chair of the House of Clergy, has passed this message on:

As some of you may be aware, the Water Companies are ignoring churches’ charitable status and starting to charge churches for the amount of area (i.e. roofs and car parks) that will collect rainwater and discharge it into the sewer network. This will effectively raise most churches’ water bills by hundreds if not thousands of pounds.

There is an online government petition that you can register on which, apparently, needs at least 15,000 to be noticed and at present stands at over 21,000!

ST PETER’S CLUB :

The children spent some time having a detailed look around the church and were then asked to choose their favourite place in church. Their choices were sometimes surprising and the reasons for their selection thoughtful and original.

The responses were used as part of the Come and Praise service when the congregation were set the same task. Joanne and Laquaisha helped with the prayers and Angel enjoyed helping make sure everyone had paper and pencil.

St Peter’s Club meets every Thursday during term-time in St Peter’s Church, younger members at 4.30 pm and the older groups at 5.30 pm. Term will end on Thursday 17th July and start on Thursday 4th September.

For further information please ring Ann on 624371 or Barbara on 624595.

FRIENDS OF ST PETER’S BARFORD :

Following the favourable response to the Barford Parish Plan Questionnaire, it is intended to set up the Friends of St Peter’s Barford. This will be a charitable organisation.

St Peter’s is an architectural and historic treasure that is very much at the heart of the village but it needs continual repair and maintenance. The cost of this is more than the church congregation alone can carry.

The object of the Friends of St Peter’s Barford is to assist the Parochial Church Council in the repair and maintenance and, where appropriate, improvement of the fabric of the church. (‘Fabric’ includes the church building together with monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, organ, bells and the tower clock. It also includes the churchyard and cemetery and their boundary walls, hedges, fences and gates.)

The Friends of St Peter’s will raise money from membership subscriptions, gifts, fundraising events, local businesses, etc. The aim is to create a new financial ‘well’ from which money may be drawn to help preserve St Peter’s church for future generations. This is seen as a responsibility that extends beyond the regular church congregation.

If you would be interested in becoming a member of this organisation, would you please contact Angela Watkins on 624758 or

CHILDREN IN CHURCH :

Do you have small children? Do you worry about bringing them to church in case they make a noise? We understand this concern but would like to reassure you that at Barford there are toy bags for children and you are welcome to take one to a corner at the back of the church and let them play there. At Sherbourne too there are toys for children at the back of church.

We would be happy to welcome you at any of our services but you may find 9.30am services on the second and fourth Sundays of the month at Barford to be most suitable for young people and third Sunday services at Sherbourne at 11.00am.

We look forward to welcoming you and your children.

David Jessett
