For most of my career I've been a C programmer. I will conveniently skip over many years of history to tell you something about my more recent programming exploits, in this instance using the Java programming language.

In the spirit of this site, you won't find an introduction or a tutorial about Java - I have built up a page of Java references which take you to places where such things are covered in much more detail.

What I will do is provide additional observations on some of the Java tutorials I found at those sites. This is as much an aid to my memory as anything - but I hope you find it useful.

You may have seen on my Linux pages reference to installing the JBuilder Java development environment. This is not covered in detail as it was the subject of article in PC Plus (April 2000). The installation, for the record, went according to plan, and the JBuilder tutorials were useful.

My aim, however, was not to use JBuilder as an application development tool but just to help get over the initial learning stages. I really wanted to investigate the Java system components, initially those in the JDK (Java Development Kit) downloaded from Sun Microsystems Java 2 Standard Edition internet site. (This is somewhat newer than the version mentioned in the article above, but probably out of date by the time you read this!).
