Since joining Reuters in 1994, much of my
time has been spent working out how application
software produced by my group can best be
deployed in a production environment. For
several year I led the team specifying and
producing infrastructure software used by all
applications on Reuters first generation data
warehouse, based on NCR 5100 systems running
NCR's UNIX SVR4 interfaced to NCR's Teradata
relational database. Part of the work involved
taking responsibility for the low level database
and TCP/IP interfaces used by the applications.
These were mainly implemented via C libraries and
shell scripts. An emerging theme was the
development of ways to make multiple complex
applications easily manageable by system
controllers.
My work now includes solving manageability
problems for Reuters newer product systems. These
are still UNIX based (but sadly a bit too secret
to be described in detail). There is a move to
using off-the-shelf software products
and external
standards for managing applications. This has
led to specifying and developing solutions based
around Reuters chosen Enterprise management
system (Tivoli Enterprise) and given me greater
awareness of system, network and security
management.
