THE QUEST FOR MADOC - RELIVE THEIR ADVENTURES

Y Madogwys (the Quest for Madoc) will be be performed in the UK in February 1999 as part of the memorial celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of one of Wales' unsung heroes - John Evans.

The play retraces John Evans' journey from his home in rural North Wales to London and then across to remote and perilous parts of the USA in search of Madoc's Welsh Indians. Fueled by the revival of 'Madoc fever' and the string support of his London-Welsh contemporaries, the young weaver set out to rediscover his descendants

The production will be full of spectacle, ritual, song and dance. The meshing and weaving of the Welsh and Native American cultural traditions will provide an exciting opportunity to explore the possible links between the two, to perpetuate a great Welsh legend, and to strengthen the relationship between Wales and America through the Madoc myth.

With a cast of ten performers of Welsh and Native American Indian descent (multiskilled performers who can act, sing, dance and play musical instruments) Dalier Sylw gives a contemporary relevance to our shared history.

In keeping our legends alive, by telling and retelling stories like these, as we move ever forward into the future, we are creating an opportunity to remember the past. Remembering the past reinforces our identities and, in turn, enhances our futures.
