'HOMELAND', GLASGOW

Continued from Homeland 1...

HOMELAND, PART 2 (abridged)

SATURDAY . I only caught part of the Jim Byrnes retrospective, though the sight of him with 1)long hair (it works!) and 2)no beard (aaarghhhh - doesn't work!) was educational. I then had to pop upstairs to get Ray Harryhausen's autograph, so missed the very start of Valentine's talk. He was polite, funny and charming with a wealth of stories. I stood up for my question. He had made some comment about surprise and looked straight at me and demanded "NAME!" in a loud voice, to which I responded boldly "Philippa!" I asked him if he had read 'Good Omens', but he hadn't. I explained that this was the 'alternative' four horsemen, with one now female. Valentine also dropped briefly into a 'safe' 'wimpy' character he is playing in a new TV movie, 'What Rats won't do'. A big 'awwwwww' moment!

Next Jim Byrnes at last. Very charming, though 'quieter' than Valentine. He revealed that Joe would be appearing on 'Raven' soon to introduce the Watcher concept for anyone who might not know it. He did a caliph's voice from one of the cartoon series he is voicing! Wonderful! Penny and I sat in on Michel's talk. He was very witty - I had already thought to myself that he must be a character actor of some major standing in France and I was right. He does a lot of the French voices for the Simpsons and gave us a few 'soundbites'. Can you imagine Krusty the clown's laugh with a French accent? We heard it!

Maroussia translated for him all the way. At one point she embellished something, Michel pretended to look angry and she hid behind her long dark brown hair! His best story (though not from his point of view) was the time he was involved in a popular series of films about the Gendarmes of St Tropez. The cast were invited to go to Switzerland, where the films were also very well known. Some local big-wig brought out costumes for them to wear and the cast began parading through the streets. A hundred fans became several hundred, then a thousand....then the cast suddenly found themselves surrounded. Crazed fans began tearing off their clothing. The cast ran and took refuge inside a shop until the police had calmed everything down!!

Three guys in harmony....
Jim: "So, this is the key to the liquor cabinet?" Valentine and Michel: "We're a couple of swells....."
Jim gets his secret gift
Connie and Cathy show Jim his birthday present. Jim: "There's one like this in Adrian's house, isn't there?!" Jette looks on proudly at all the needlework skills. See the dappled blue square by Jim's right knee? Mine's the next one in!

**************************************************************************************

I stayed on to watch 'Homeland' and hear Elaine's rivetting and hilarious talk of working on set with Adrian and how that isn't her voice you hear in the episode....G. Nor is the inside of the real inn anything like the set they used where the sword hung! (I would have thought that hanging a weapon as deadly as that in a public place where anyone could cut themselves on it - especially after a few wee drams - would probably get the owners arrested, but I digress...). Basically, be very careful about mentioning 1)horses and 2)Elaine's car in Adrian's presence.....G. After *that* I changed into my kilted skirt and other Scttish heritage bits, had some food and went down to the video room. We thought we might get the AAA arc, but instead they showed 2 Be/Not 2 Be. What an ending......

On to the Ceilidh. The first dance I came in on was 'Dashing White Sargeant' which I knew from school. We next did this fiendishly complicated number, involving one person going into the middle of a set of 8 at a time and then executing a long series of maneouvres. We muddled through, grinning! After a rest, the last dance was basically a double 'strip the willow' - girls facing boys, twirl your partner, twirl the next person of opposite gender, twirl your partner again, move down the set, keeping this up all the time. Several couples are 'on the go' at once. THEN they increased the speed...... CHAOS! An impromtu disco in the convention bar at midnight turned into a fully fledged disco at about 1 a.m. in the Kintyre suite and I got to bed very late. AGAIN.
