Scout's Diary 1999

The Scouts have been very active with much of the effort going into the preparation for the District Camp. As the camp was being held on the Gower Peninsula in Wales and the District Scouts did not want the cost of the camp to be too expensive, various fund raising activities have been run. This has consisted of ‘bag packs’ at ASDA and Operation Springclean. This was an ambitious event for the District where mobile crews were on call to collect rubbish. The event had superb support and coverage from KCBC. The event was a great success and enjoyed by the Scouts. Unfortunately the collecting was too suparclebre.gif (18083 bytes)ccessful, as by mid afternoon the refuse tip refused the Scouts entry as all the skips were full! The fundraising was very successful and allowed the cost of the camp to be set at £20. The camp took place during the end of May bank holiday and was an action packed weekend. Activities included caving at the Porth y ogoff caves, climbing and abseiling at Three Cliffs Bay, canoeing in Swansea bay and pony trekking on the Gower.

The Easter Camp was held in the Lake District at the Eskdale Youth Hostel. The main activity was hill walking. The Saturday was like a summers day ( unlike the snow and floods of last years Easter Camp ) and everyone had an enjoyable hike through Eskdale, with the more energetic Scouts hiking to the top of Scafell Pike.

Some of the older Scouts have been involved in their Chief Scout’s Challenge, which requires the planning and taking part in an expedition that includes a project of their choice. This demanded much hard work by the Scouts in the planning and training for the expedition. The expedition took place in County Durham and involved hiking 65 kilometres carrying all equipment. The project was concerned with the analysis of water from the expedition area. The ‘challenge’ took place on the first bank holiday in May and was successfully completed by Richard Dellow, Jude Chapman, Robert Ellis and Rory Johnston. This was followed by a presentation to the Troop and the creation of a web site ( http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~dellow/csc/Default.htm ) with the details of the expedition.

During June, the Scouts joined forces with the Cubs and took part in a 24 hour challenge at Laxton. This was part of the Outdoor Activity Award and involved building backwoods shelters, cooking without utensils, night hike ( highlight were the glow worms in Laxton Woods ) and cycling back to Gretton.
