(27) A first step in breaking down the wall round the church is to do a proper job on the church’s existing means of communication.

But the image of the mediaeval castle tells us more than this; it says something fundamental about the Christian task:

Our task is to go out into the world in the power of the Spirit to help people to find Christ who is already there among them, unknown and yet well-known, like a guerrilla leader.

Obviously what we do in church is important. Our thanksgiving and communion with Christ on Sunday are what give us grace to communicate God’s love and build community outside the church from Monday to Saturday.

God is at work in his world, and people are called to find God in their daily lives. We are to be with them as we meet Christ in each other.
