CHANCE

One of my paternal great-great-great-grandmothers was Elizabeth Chance (1788-1859). She was born at The Lee, the first child of Joseph Chance (1764-1844) and Fanny PHILBY (1765-?).

Elizabeth Chance (1788-1859) married John JARVIS (1798-1861?) at Great Missenden in 1822. They had four children at Great Missenden and Chesham.

Joseph Chance (1764-1844) married Fanny Philby at The Lee in 1787. They had six more children after Elizabeth, the later ones were all born at Great Missenden. Four of these children are known to have married but they all seem to have moved away from Great Missenden. One of the daughters, Hannah Chance, married her cousin James Philby. Fanny must have died in about 1803, probably while having her last child. Joseph Chance remarried Hannah ALDRIDGE in 1804 but they did not have any children. Joseph is recorded in the 1841 census at Great Missenden aged 80, a very good age for the times.

Joseph Chance (1764-1844) was the third child of the four known to have been born at Great Missenden to Thomas Chance (1733-?) and Elizabeth BIGNALL (1734-?). Thomas and Elizabeth married at Great Missenden in 1758.

Thomas Chance (1733-?) was born at Great Missenden, the second child of John Chance and Elizabeth BRADLEY. John and Elizabeth married at Great Missenden in 1730 and had nine children there. Marriages are known for four of these children but only one family is known to have lived at Great Missenden. Mary Chance (1746-?) married Robert FRENCH in 1764 and they had at least five children.

The origins of John Chance are not known, they have not yet been investigated.
