This page is provided to give you some basic information about The Sea Cadet Corps in general
and T.S. Sirius in particular.
Birmingham, Bartley Green Sea Cadet Unit (T.S. Sirius) has been in existence since 1989, and during this time has achieved a great deal.
- Bartley Green (South Birmingham) may seem an unlikely location for a Sea Cadet Unit as it is just about as far from the coast as possible! However, this does not prevent us from taking part in waterborne activities, as we have access to a large inland reservoir where we moor our boats and spend most of the summer!
- The Sea Cadet Corps is open to all youngsters, male and female, between the ages of 10 and 18 years. It is not a pre-service organisation, but more of a youth service run on Royal Navy lines, using Naval values, disciplines and activities.
Birmingham, Bartley Green Sea Cadets is a registered charity, with little or no financial aid from the Ministry of Defence. We are therefore, almost entirely self-supporting.
The Aims of the Sea Cadet Corps
The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to help young people towards responsible adulthood by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy. Through adventurous activities the Cadets become self reliant, and through teamwork they develop consideration and respect for others. The Corps encourages high personal standards and a sense of purpose, and provides a sound foundation for future careers.
The Corps provide a range of activities and skills, which are attractive and adventurous within a caring discipline to which young people can respond. This in turn aids their development into self-confident, self-disciplined young adults and encourages a sense of responsibility to the community.
