Nunhead Wildlife

Any visitor to Nunhead cannot say that they have had a full visit until they have experienced the thrills and spills of a night on the town in Nunhead.

Please note that those wishing to 'paint the town red' will be required to supply their own tins of paint, however brushes may be supplied if requested in advance.

Pubs of Nunhead
The Railway Tavern

The first night-spot that will in all likelihood greet our intrepid visitor is this building of opulent splendour. One of the happiest and friendliest pubs in England and rightful winner of umpteen architectural awards, the publican is so keen to provide a better-than-none service that it is frequently the case that the numbers of bar staff outnumber those of the customers, providing all who come with that special personal touch. The games room, with it's enormous variety of traditional pub sports (err... pool, or um.. pool..) should not be missed. However if you've just arrived by train or omnibus then at least the Tavern is a mere stagger away...

The Belvedere

If a complete lack of atmosphere and a heavy sense of foreboding is more your thing, then appropriately close to the cemetery squats the Belvedere. At least I think it's a pub, I haven't honestly got that close. Still, dear visitor, go for it, you have nothing to lose, erm....... For our female visitors you can at least guarantee a ladies room well stocked for those little emergencies, and the location of this pub is handy for those intent on making something of a pub crawl of their night time tour of delightful Nunhead.

The Man of Kent

A friendly public house selling traditional Irish ales with traditional Irish music and a traditional Irish staff selling beer to traditional Irish drunks. Having said that it's a damn good place to saviour the wild side of the Nunhead night. Certainly a favourite with this guide writer, despite the lengthy walk back from the pub (i.e. it's more than 100 metres away from home). Don't expect to find Nunhead's richies here, their more likely to be soaking up the atmos. of the historically quaint Nun's Head.

Nun's Head

The original pub proudly asserting it's origins in Henry VIII's times (He of the VI wives). Fortunately the beer is fresher, and generally speaking the Nun's Head is the place where anyone who is anyone is to be found. On any night of the week voices can be heard raised in a hundred different languages, betraying the true world-wide appeal of Nunhead's attractions (it's funny how the more the writer drinks the more foreign languages he seems to hear.... I could have sworn my girlfriend was English when I met her in here earlier).
