PAWS organises science and engineering based evening events and also visits for writers and producers to sites with particular relevance to modern science and technology.
Visits
In addition to large cross-cultural evening events, PAWS also organises informal meetings with small groups of scientists, writers and producers, leading to visits to research departments in various disciplines. One group of six writers spent a day at the Hammersmith Hospital, where Professor Amanda Fisher had arranged a tête-à-tête style rendezvous with lab leaders from both Epigenetics and Development and Genomic and Molecular Medicine, including a live demonstration of how to transplant genetic material from a human cell into a mouse embryo.
"This is one of the images which
will stay with me for life and is certain to make its way out in writing. What
a unique day" Tony
Etchells, Screenwriter.
In March this year, after a lunch meeting hosted by BBC Drama Scotland a group
was invited to spend a day at the Human Reproductive Sciences Unit at the Queen's
Medical Research Institute, Edinburgh, where Professor Philippa Saunders had
gathered a large group of scientists for free informal discussion and a day which
included taking part in experiments testing samples of DNA for evidence of cancer.
"I
was most struck by the passion the scientists feel for their work, and their
sincere desire to communicate; they were happy to engage with us at whatever
level we felt comfortable with and took our questions and concerns seriously" Sergio
Casci Screenwriter.
Future visits
A visit is planned for the autumn to the Department of Physics
and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow at the invitation of Professor Sheila
Rowan, Experimental Physics. |
