Our Route
The First Day

The First Day...

I remember nearly everything about the first day of our trip. All 3 of us couldn't wait to get going. We didn't know what to expect, if we would get to surf all of the spots that we had picked out of magazines, what each country would be like, or who we would meet. Although we visited a lot of beautiful places it's easy to see now that we're back home that it was actually meeting so many new friends while travelling that made our trip so good, not just the scenery.

Some of the friends we met in Fiji. From left to right: Simon, Jeremy, Steve, Ric, Joe, Craig, Alex and Helen* TIP

The number of new friends that you'll meet when you're travelling is unbelievable. We'd been told by friends that had travelled before that we'd meet loads of people, but we didn't really believe them. Take it from us, you'll meet loads of people on their own trip, as well as friendly locals.

Don't be put off if you're going to have to go travelling on your own. Go anyway. We met lots of people who had started out travelling on their own but had met other backpackers at hostels and had ended up travelling with them for 2 or 3 months. Travelling on your own is probably the best way to make new friends on a trip.
