Great British Beer |
There is nothing like the Great British pint!
We have over 250 000 on offer.
As you walk into Olympia you will be astounded by the amount of bars and beers, the range is simply unparalleled. No matter if you are an expert looking for something new, or a novice out for a slightly different taste experience, the beer is what it is all about.
How we make sure it is in perfect condition
The way we choose the beers is quite complicated. It mainly relies on the fact that a brewery would be hard pushed to brew good beer and not have CAMRA find out about it. We have to look at previous sales figures but we mainly go for quality with a range of styles, regions and strengths. The beer team go through all sorts of trials and tribulations to make sure all the breweries deliver at the same time. This can be made worse by The Champion Beer of Britain contest (C.B.O.B.) The nominees for this are taken from the membership as a whole. These are then judged by experienced tasters and independant judges to decide the winners in each catagory. Therefore the ordering team can have their order, budget and deliveries sorted out when they find there is a beer in C.B.O.B. that hasn't been ordered, obviously they then need to very quickly! As with all work at the festival, this is a very demanding job and has to be done around any (paying) career the member has. All these people are truely dedicated to (your) enjoyment of quality beer!
To look after all this beer and make sure it reaches it you in perfect condition is a mammoth task undertaken by a small army of experienced CAMRA volunteers.
As any previous visitors to Olympia will know, keeping anything cool in what is a giant greenhouse in August is no mean feat. Every cask of beer is connected up to a cooling system which circulates cold water through a saddle which sits on the cask. This saddle is essentially a lattice work of metal pipes. This is all contained under an insulating cask jacket.
The rest is down to the fact that a lot of our staff are as good as the best publican at looking after the beer. Through experience they know when to vent, when to tap and, most importantly, when to serve. We also have our own quality control department which can run a full range of tests on any beer that does not taste as it should.
