This page lists and comments on interesting Linux books, Internet sites, and so on.

Linux follows in a tradition of software developed by collaboration with the intention of making it easily available to all for any purpose with certain stipulations regarding modification and redistribution. This has become known in recent years as the Open Source Initiative, though it has been around for much longer. Richard Stallman, now president of the Free Software Foundation, launched the GNU (GNU's Not UNIX) project in 1984. This produced amongst other things the Emacs editor and their popular GNU compilers.

Well known in Open Source circles is Eric Raymond. At his site you will find his work "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" which contrasts the traditional model of software development by selected people in isolation with the open character of the bazaar.

There are many good and well known Linux sites - here is a list of a few I have come across:

http://www.linux.com Linux tutorials and news
http://www.slashdot.org Discussion and news site with Linux topics prominent
http://www.gnu.org The site of the GNU project mentioned above
http://www.linuxworld.com On-line magazine offering wide Linux coverage
http://www.sun.com/software/linux Sun's Linux site - Java tools to the fore, not suprisingly.
http://developers.sun.com Developer downloads from Sun.
