Linux follows in a tradition of software developed by
collaboration with the intention of making it easily available to all
for any purpose with certain stipulations regarding modification and
redistribution. This has become known in recent years as the Open Source Initiative, though it
has been around for much longer. Richard Stallman, now president of the
Free Software Foundation,
launched the GNU (GNU's Not UNIX) project in 1984. This produced
amongst other things the Emacs editor and their popular GNU compilers.
Well known in Open Source circles is Eric Raymond. At his site you
will find his work "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" which contrasts the
traditional model of software development by selected people in
isolation with the open character of the bazaar.
